A wave bioreactor bag (also called a rocker bag or rocking bag) is a single-use flexible cultivation vessel used in mammalian cell culture scale-up. The bag sits on a rocking platform that creates a wave motion, providing gentle agitation and oxygen transfer without the mechanical stress caused by impeller-based stirred tank bioreactors.<\/p>\n
The rocking platform tilts the bag back and forth at a controlled angle and frequency, creating a surface wave inside the liquid. This wave motion achieves mixing and gas-liquid oxygen transfer without submerged spargers or rotating impellers, making it ideal for shear-sensitive cells such as mammalian hybridomas, CHO cells, and primary T cells.<\/p>\n
Wave bioreactor bags are widely used for viral vaccine production, recombinant protein production in CHO and HEK293 cells, seed train expansion for stirred tank bioreactors, and CAR-T and NK cell manufacturing in GMP environments.<\/p>\n
Single-use wave bags eliminate the need for cleaning and sterilization between runs, reducing turnaround time and cross-contamination risk. The closed, pre-sterilized system is particularly advantageous in multi-product GMP facilities.<\/p>\n
