Description
Product Overview
SeamlessBio Human Serum Delipidated is produced from defibrinated human plasma sourced from EU-qualified donors. Lipoproteins and lipids are selectively removed by lipoprotein precipitation or activated charcoal treatment, yielding a human serum matrix with significantly reduced lipid content. Sterile filtered at 0.2 µm and supplied with full donor screening documentation.
Delipidated human serum is the reference matrix for lipemia interference studies in IVD assay development (CLSI EP7), for immunoassay calibrator preparation where lipid background must be eliminated, and for endocrine assay development where hormones and steroids must also be removed. Available in three variants to match specific application requirements. See the full human serum portfolio on our Human Sera overview page.

Applications
| Application | Recommended Variant | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Lipemia interference studies (IVD) | SP1010 — Standard delipidated | Baseline lipid-depleted human matrix for interference evaluation per CLSI EP7 — used to assess the impact of elevated lipid levels on assay accuracy |
| Antibody assay development | Humser_delip — Delipidated + IgG-free | Removes endogenous IgG background signal — essential for immunoassays detecting human antibodies where the matrix IgG would otherwise interfere with detection |
| Hormone / steroid / endocrine assays | F12010 — Double charcoal treated | Removes lipids, hormones and steroids — the preferred blank matrix for endocrine assay development and steroid receptor binding studies |
| Lipoprotein research | SP1010 — Standard delipidated | Lipoprotein-depleted human serum as negative control or blank matrix for lipoprotein metabolism research |
| IVD calibrator matrix | SP1010 or Humser_delip | Human serum matrix matching for IVD calibrators and controls under EU IVDR — lipid-depleted background minimises matrix-related bias |
| Lipid metabolism research | SP1010 — Standard delipidated | Lipid-free serum supplement baseline for cell-based lipid metabolism studies — not recommended as a general-purpose cell culture supplement |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is delipidated human serum used for in IVD assay development?
Delipidated human serum is the standard reference matrix for lipemia interference studies in in-vitro diagnostic (IVD) assay development, conducted per CLSI EP7 guidelines. By providing a human serum matrix from which lipoproteins and lipids have been selectively removed, it allows developers to assess the impact of elevated lipid concentrations on assay accuracy without changing other matrix components. It is also used as a blank calibrator matrix in IVD assay calibration where lipid background must be eliminated, and as a starting material for preparing spiked interference samples at defined lipid concentrations.
What is the difference between delipidated and double charcoal treated human serum?
Standard delipidated human serum (SP1010) has lipoproteins and lipids removed while leaving IgG, hormones and steroids intact — it is the correct choice for lipemia interference studies and general lipid-depleted matrix applications. Double charcoal treated and delipidated serum (F12010) undergoes an additional activated charcoal step that also adsorbs and removes hormones, steroids and other small hydrophobic molecules. F12010 is the preferred matrix for endocrine assay development, steroid receptor binding studies, and any application where endogenous hormones would interfere with detection. Charcoal treatment does not remove IgG unless specifically requested.
When should the IgG-free delipidated variant (Humser_delip) be used?
The delipidated + IgG-free variant (Humser_delip) is required when both lipid background and endogenous IgG must be absent from the matrix — primarily in assays designed to detect human antibodies (IgG, IgM, IgA) in patient samples. Without IgG depletion, the high concentration of endogenous IgG in normal human serum would generate a competing background signal in antibody detection assays. This variant is commonly used in ELISA and chemiluminescent immunoassay development for autoantibody detection, anti-drug antibody (ADA) assays, and serological diagnostics.
Is delipidated human serum suitable for cell culture?
Delipidated human serum is used in lipid metabolism research where a lipid-free serum baseline is specifically required — for example, in studies of lipoprotein uptake, fatty acid metabolism or cholesterol biosynthesis in cell models. It is not recommended as a general-purpose cell culture supplement, because the removal of lipids also depletes lipid-soluble growth factors and carrier proteins that support cell growth and viability. For general human cell culture applications, standard Human Serum Type AB is the appropriate product.
What documentation is supplied with Human Serum Delipidated?
Every order includes a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS). A donor screening report — covering HIV 1/2, HBsAg, HCV antibody and syphilis screening per EU blood directive — is available on request. Products are handled at ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 certified partner facilities. Batch reservation for up to 36 months is available on request, which is particularly important for long-term IVD development programmes requiring lot-to-lot consistency in the reference matrix.
