Low-shear mixing for sensitive cell lines
Rocker bags work by mounting on a tilting platform that generates a wave motion through the bag — providing mixing and gas exchange without mechanical impellers. This low-shear mixing profile makes them the preferred format for cell types that are sensitive to hydrodynamic stress.
Microcarrier-based adherent cell culture is a particularly common application: excessive shear from impeller-driven systems can detach or damage cells growing on carrier beads, while rocking motion maintains a gentler environment. Stem cell expansion, primary cell culture and certain viral vector production workflows also benefit from the reduced mechanical stress.
For applications requiring higher oxygen transfer rates at larger scale, our 3D Bioprocessing Bags on orbital platforms are the alternative — see our 2D vs. 3D Selection Guide for a direct comparison.
Typical applications
- Shear-sensitive mammalian cell culture
- Microcarrier-based adherent cell expansion
- Stem cell and primary cell expansion
- Viral vector production (AAV, lentiviral)
- Vaccine production on rocking platforms
- Seed train and inoculum expansion
- Process development for shear-sensitive lines
- CAR-T and cell therapy manufacturing
