Description
Product Overview
SeamlessBio Newborn Calf Serum (NCS) — US Origin is collected from healthy bovine calves within the first 10 days of life at USDA 9CFR licensed collection facilities in the United States. Sterile filtered at 0.2 µm and batch-tested for endotoxin, haemoglobin, mycoplasma, and BVDV.
NCS occupies the position between FBS and standard Calf Serum: lower IgG than CS, marginally higher growth factor content, and significantly lower cost than FBS — making it the preferred choice when reduced immunoglobulin background matters but full FBS specification is not required. See the full portfolio on our Calf & Newborn Calf Serum page.

NCS vs. CS vs. FBS — Which Bovine Serum Is Right?
| Property | NCS (≤10 days) | CS (14 days–6 months) | FBS (fetal) |
|---|---|---|---|
| IgG content | Low | Moderate–High | Very low |
| Growth factors | Moderate–High | Moderate | Highest |
| Cost vs. FBS | 30–50% saving | 40–60% saving | Reference |
| Best for | Low IgG background, routine culture | High-volume, cost-driven culture | Primary cells, stem cells, demanding workflows |
Applications
| Application | Protocol | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Routine cell line maintenance | 5–10% NCS in DMEM, RPMI or MEM | CHO, HeLa, Vero, HEK293, BHK-21, MDCK — preferred over CS when lower IgG background matters |
| Immunoassay development | NCS as blocking agent or culture supplement | Lower IgG reduces non-specific binding compared to standard CS |
| Veterinary & agricultural research | 5–20% NCS in species-appropriate medium | Bovine, ovine, porcine, equine cell lines |
| Large-scale cell banking | NCS in cryopreservation medium | Cost-efficient alternative to FBS for master and working cell bank cryopreservation |
| Bioreactor seed train (non-ATMP) | 5–10% NCS at N-2 to N-1 seed stages | Cost optimisation before switching to FBS or serum-free at production scale |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Newborn Calf Serum and how does it differ from Calf Serum and FBS?
Newborn Calf Serum (NCS) is collected from bovine calves within the first 10 days of life — before full maternal IgG transfer and after birth. This gives NCS lower IgG than standard Calf Serum (CS, up to 6 months) and marginally higher growth factor content. FBS is collected from fetuses before birth and has the lowest IgG and highest growth factor profile of all three. NCS is the preferred choice when lower IgG background is important but full FBS specification is not required — delivering a 30–50% cost saving versus FBS.
Can Newborn Calf Serum replace FBS in existing cell culture protocols?
For most standard immortalised cell lines (CHO, HeLa, Vero, HEK293, BHK-21, MDCK), NCS can be used as a drop-in FBS replacement at the same concentration (5–10%). A brief adaptation period of 2–3 passages is recommended to confirm growth kinetics and viability. NCS is not recommended for primary cells, stem cells, or applications that specifically require the high growth factor content of FBS.
What is the BSE/TSE status of US Origin Newborn Calf Serum?
US Newborn Calf Serum is collected at USDA 9CFR licensed facilities and supplied with a 9CFR Certificate of Analysis. The United States has controlled BSE risk status (OIE classification). A TSE/BSE risk assessment statement is available on request for regulatory submissions. For applications requiring negligible BSE risk documentation, consider our Calf Serum Australia Origin with EDQM CEP.
Is heat inactivation available for Newborn Calf Serum US Origin?
Yes — heat inactivation (56 °C, 30 min) is available on request. Heat inactivation inactivates complement proteins and is recommended for complement-sensitive applications such as immunoassays and haematopoietic cell culture. It is documented in the lot CoA.
What documentation is supplied with Newborn Calf Serum US Origin?
Every order includes a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) and the USDA 9CFR CoA. Additional documentation — TSE/BSE statement, Certificate of Origin (CoO), Safety Data Sheet (SDS), sterility and mycoplasma test protocols — is available on request. Products are handled at ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 certified partner facilities.
