Description
Product Overview
SeamlessBio Goat Serum — Normal Goat Serum (NGS), EU Origin is collected from healthy, non-immunised Capra hircus, sterile filtered at 0.2 µm, and batch-tested for purity and consistency. Supplied with full lot documentation for use in immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, ELISA, and multiplex assays.
Normal Goat Serum is the most widely used blocking serum in immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence. Anti-goat secondary antibodies — available in a broad range of fluorescent conjugates and enzyme labels — are among the most frequently used secondary antibodies in research. NGS pre-incubation (2–10% in PBS or TBS-Tween) saturates non-specific binding sites and endogenous Fc receptor sites in tissue sections before the secondary antibody is applied, preventing false-positive background signal. The same blocking principle applies to ELISA and multiplex IHC/IF panels where goat-derived detection reagents are used. See the full portfolio on our Animal Sera overview page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Normal Goat Serum (NGS) the standard blocking reagent in IHC and immunofluorescence?
Anti-goat secondary antibodies are among the most frequently used secondary antibodies in research — they are cost-effective, highly specific, and available across a wide range of fluorescent dye conjugates and enzyme labels. When a goat secondary antibody is used, tissue sections and cell surfaces contain endogenous proteins and Fc receptor sites that can bind non-specifically to goat immunoglobulins, producing false-positive background signal. Pre-incubating the sample with 2–10% Normal Goat Serum in PBS or TBS-Tween saturates these sites before the secondary antibody is applied. Because the blocking serum is species-matched to the secondary antibody, it occupies non-specific sites without competing with the primary-secondary detection pair.
When should Normal Goat Serum (NGS) be used instead of donkey serum (NDS)?
The blocking serum must always match the species of the secondary antibody used in the assay. Normal Goat Serum (NGS) is the correct choice when anti-goat secondary antibodies are used for detection. If the protocol instead uses donkey-derived secondary antibodies — common in multiplex panels where multiple secondary antibodies from different species must be used simultaneously — Normal Donkey Serum (NDS) is required. In multiplex protocols combining both goat and donkey secondary antibodies, species-matched blocking must be applied per detection layer. Contact us to discuss mixed-protocol blocking strategy for complex panels.
Can Normal Goat Serum be used in multiplex immunohistochemistry panels?
Yes — NGS is widely used in multiplex IHC and IF panels where one or more detection layers employ anti-goat secondary antibodies. In multiplex protocols, species-matched blocking is critical: if the panel includes secondary antibodies from multiple species, each blocking step should use serum matched to the respective secondary antibody species. NGS effectively blocks cross-reactivity between panel layers attributable to goat secondary antibodies, reducing background and improving signal specificity in complex multi-marker staining protocols.
Is heat-inactivated Normal Goat Serum available?
Yes — heat inactivation (56 °C, 30 min) is available on request. Heat inactivation destroys complement proteins and is recommended for complement-sensitive cell-based assays and protocols where complement activation must be avoided. For standard IHC, IFA, and ELISA blocking applications, non-heat-inactivated NGS is typically used. Please specify the required form when requesting a quote.
What documentation is supplied with EU Origin Normal Goat Serum?
Every order includes a Certificate of Analysis (CoA), Certificate of Origin (CoO), and Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Additional documentation — sterility and mycoplasma test protocols — is available on request. Products are handled at ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 certified partner facilities.
