How does rat serum differ from FBS or other bovine sera?
FBS and other bovine sera are general-purpose cell culture supplements used across a broad range of mammalian cell lines. For rat primary cells and certain rat cell lines requiring a species-matched environment, rat serum can also serve as a culture supplement. The two product categories are not functionally interchangeable.
Which rat cell lines can be cultivated with rat serum?
Rat serum is suitable as a species-appropriate supplement for rat cell lines including PC12 (pheochromocytoma), INS-1 (pancreatic beta cells), NRK (normal rat kidney), H9c2 (cardiac myoblasts), and Rat-1 (fibroblasts), as well as rat primary cells such as astrocytes, cardiomyocytes, and hepatocytes. For standard immortalised cell lines not of rat origin, FBS or Calf Serum is the preferred supplement.
Is heat-inactivated or gamma-irradiated rat serum available?
Yes — both heat inactivation (56 °C, 30 min) and gamma irradiation are available on request. Heat inactivation destroys complement proteins and is recommended for complement-sensitive immunoassay applications. Gamma-irradiated rat serum is used when additional sterility assurance is required. Both treatments are documented in the lot Certificate of Analysis. Please specify the required treatment when requesting a quote.
