Rocker bags are designed for use on rocking (wave-style) bioreactor platforms, where the bag is mounted on a tilting platform that creates a wave motion within the bag. This provides mixing and gas exchange without the mechanical impeller agitation used in stirred-tank systems, making it particularly suitable for shear-sensitive cell lines.
The gentler mixing profile of rocking platforms is frequently preferred for microcarrier-based adherent cell culture, where excessive shear can damage cells attached to carrier beads, as well as for certain primary and stem cell culture protocols where mechanical stress affects viability.
