Quick Definition
What is a 3D Bioprocessing Bag?: A 3D bioprocessing bag (cuboid biocontainer bag) is a single-use bag with internal gussets that create a three-dimensional, box-like shape when filled. The cuboid geometry maximises volume per footprint, provides stability in large-volume holders, and is the standard format for single-use bioreactor systems above 100 L.
3D bags in single-use bioreactors
In single-use stirred-tank bioreactor systems, the 3D cuboid bag is the disposable inner biocontainer — holding the cell culture and discarded after each batch, eliminating CIP/SIP for the vessel interior. The bag fits inside a rigid outer support housing providing mechanical stability during agitation.
Scale-up with 3D bags
Typical scale-up: 100 L pilot → 200 L clinical → 500–1,000 L commercial. Each scale requires a bag validated for that bioreactor platform — bag geometry, port placement and sparger specifications are platform-specific. Contact SeamlessBio for custom specifications.
Key Facts
- Cuboid three-dimensional shape when filled — internal gussets prevent collapse
- Volume range: 100 L – 1,000 L (SeamlessBio portfolio)
- Primary applications: large-scale buffer and media hold, bioreactor biocontainer, bulk drug substance storage before purification
- Fits in rigid stainless steel or plastic outer holders — provides structural support during agitation and sparging
- Bioreactor 3D bags have integrated sensor ports (pH, DO, temperature), sparger connections, agitation shaft ports
- NOT suitable for freeze-thaw — thick, variable geometry creates uneven ice crystal formation
