zenCELL owl

zenCELL owl — 24-Channel Incubator Microscope

Label-free brightfield live-cell imaging for every standard incubator. The zenCELL owl monitors up to 24 wells simultaneously, quantifies confluence and proliferation in real time, and requires no dyes, no dedicated microscopy room, and under 10 minutes to set up.

Product Overview

The zenCELL owl sits inside any standard CO₂ incubator and captures brightfield images across all 24 channels at user-defined intervals as short as 1 minute. Integrated software automatically calculates confluence percentage, growth curves, and time-lapse videos — exported as PNG, JPG, or CSV — without a single fluorescent label or manual count.

What the zenCELL owl Measures

Three core read-outs are computed automatically from label-free brightfield images:

  • Confluence % — real-time monolayer coverage calculated per well at every time point
  • Cell performance & proliferation — growth kinetics and doubling-time derived from the confluence curve
  • Time-lapse imaging — frame series and rendered videos to visualise morphological dynamics

Applications

Application What the zenCELL owl delivers
Cytotoxicity assays Kinetic confluence curves replace fixed end-point viability stains
Routine cell culture monitoring Automated passaging alerts based on live confluence thresholds
Scratch / wound-healing assays Gap-closure quantified label-free over hours or days
3D spheroid & organoid growth Morphology and size tracked across all 24 wells simultaneously
Transfection & viral vector studies Cell health and viability monitored continuously without fixation
Drug safety & toxicology High-content kinetic data for IC₅₀ and time-to-effect profiling

Why Label-Free?

Fluorescent dyes and transfection reagents alter cell behaviour, introduce phototoxicity, and add cost per experiment. The zenCELL owl bypasses all of this: brightfield contrast alone drives the confluence algorithm, so cells remain unperturbed from day one to endpoint. The same cells can still be processed for downstream assays (ELISA, flow cytometry, sequencing) after continuous imaging — a combination impossible with destructive staining workflows.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the zenCELL owl differ from IncuCyte or Lionheart systems?

Benchtop systems such as IncuCyte and Lionheart are standalone incubator-microscopes that replace the incubator and require dedicated bench space, climate control, and lengthy installation. The zenCELL owl is a 1.05 kg insert that fits inside any existing CO₂ incubator you already own, is bus-powered over a single USB 3.0 cable, and is operational in under 10 minutes. It covers 24 channels simultaneously at a fraction of the footprint and capital cost, making it practical for shared-lab or multi-project environments where a dedicated imaging incubator is not feasible.

How does label-free confluence measurement actually work?

The owl captures brightfield images at each channel using LED illumination. Its integrated software applies a pixel-classification algorithm that distinguishes cell-covered regions from cell-free substrate based on optical contrast and texture — no staining, no fluorescent signal. The result is a confluence percentage per well at every time point, displayed as a live growth curve. Because the method is non-destructive, the same cells can be passaged, harvested, or processed for downstream assays after imaging is complete.

Which cell types and vessel formats are compatible?

The zenCELL owl has been validated with adherent mammalian cell lines (HeLa, CHO, HEK 293, Vero, A549, and others), primary cells, and 3D spheroid cultures in ultra-low-attachment formats. Supported vessel formats include standard 24-well and 6-well plates, T-flasks, and cell culture dishes. Dedicated well-plate adapters are available for plates from Eppendorf, Greiner, Falcon, Corning, Fisherbrand, Kartell/TPP, and Sarstedt (see adapter table above). Note: suspension cells without an attachment phase are not suitable for confluence-based quantification.

What does the software output and how is data exported?

The zenCELL owl software displays real-time confluence curves for all 24 channels on a single dashboard. At the end of — or at any point during — an experiment, data can be exported as PNG or JPG images (individual frames and composite overviews) and as CSV files containing time-stamped confluence values per well, ready for import into Excel, GraphPad Prism, or any statistical package. Video time-lapses are available as an optional add-on. No proprietary cloud subscription is required; all data stays local.

How does the 2-week in-house trial work?

SeamlessBio ships a fully operational zenCELL owl unit to your lab — typically within the DACH region — pre-configured and ready to use. You run it in your own incubator with your own cells for two weeks at no charge and no obligation. A product specialist is available throughout for setup support and application questions. At the end of the trial period you return the unit or place an order. To arrange a trial, use the “Request Demo / Quote” button below.
