SeamlessBio — Bovine Sera

Neugeborenen-Kälberserum (NCS)

Collected from bovine calves within the first 10 days of life — lower IgG than standard Calf Serum, higher growth factor content, and 30–50% cheaper than FBS. Available in US and Australian origin with complete BSE/TSE documentation.

Newborn Calf Serum bottle, US and Australia origin, SeamlessBio
01

Low IgG Background

Collected within the first 10 days of life — before full maternal immunoglobulin transfer — delivering significantly lower IgG than standard Calf Serum.

02

30–50% Cheaper than FBS

Equivalent growth performance for most standard immortalised cell lines at a fraction of the cost — the most cost-efficient serum when low IgG matters.

When to choose NCS over CS or FBS

Newborn Calf Serum fills the gap between standard Calf Serum and FBS. Because calves are collected within the first 10 days of life — before maternal colostrum-derived IgG reaches full saturation — NCS has significantly lower immunoglobulin levels than CS (up to 6 months), while retaining moderate to high growth factor content.

For most standard immortalised cell lines, NCS is a direct drop-in FBS replacement at the same concentration (5–10%), with a recommended 2–3 passage adaptation. It is not recommended for primary cells, stem cells, or applications requiring the precise growth factor profile of FBS.

Where IgG background is irrelevant and maximum cost savings are the only driver, standard Calf Serum (CS) at 40–60% below FBS cost is the better choice.

Common applications

  • Routine mammalian cell line maintenance (CHO, HeLa, Vero, HEK293, BHK-21, MDCK)
  • Immunoassay development — lower IgG reduces non-specific background
  • Veterinary & agricultural research (bovine, ovine, porcine, equine)
  • Large-scale cell banking (master & working cell banks)
  • Bioreactor seed train cost optimisation (N-2 to N-1 stages)
  • Any routine FBS application where reduced IgG background is preferred

Häufig gestellte Fragen

What is Newborn Calf Serum and how does it differ from Calf Serum and FBS?
Newborn Calf Serum (NCS) is collected from bovine calves within the first 10 days of life, before full transfer of maternal IgG via colostrum. This results in significantly lower immunoglobulin levels than standard Calf Serum (CS, collected up to 6 months of age) while retaining moderate to high growth factor content. FBS (fetal bovine serum) is collected pre-birth, giving it the lowest IgG and highest growth factor profile. NCS sits between CS and FBS: preferred when low IgG background matters but full FBS specification is not required.
Can NCS replace FBS directly in existing cell culture protocols?
For most standard immortalised cell lines — CHO, HeLa, Vero, HEK293, BHK-21, MDCK, 3T3 — NCS can be used as a direct drop-in FBS replacement at the same concentration (5–10%). A brief adaptation period of 2–3 passages is recommended to confirm growth kinetics and viability. NCS is not recommended for primary cells, stem cells, or applications where FBS-specific growth factor composition is critical.
What is the difference between US and Australian NCS origin?
Both origins deliver equivalent growth performance and the same product specifications. The key difference is regulatory documentation: US origin carries USDA 9CFR certification and a controlled BSE risk status (OIE). Australian origin holds OIE negligible BSE risk — the highest available classification, with no indigenous BSE ever detected — and an EDQM Certificate of Eligibility (CEP) is available for European regulatory submissions. Choose Australian origin when TSE/BSE documentation is critical for your regulatory pathway.
Is heat inactivation available for Newborn Calf Serum?
Yes — heat inactivation (56 °C, 30 min) is available on request for both US and Australian origin NCS. Heat inactivation inactivates complement proteins and is recommended for complement-sensitive applications including immunoassays and haematopoietic cell culture. It is documented in the lot Certificate of Analysis.
Is batch reservation available and what documentation is included?
Yes — validated lots can be reserved for up to 36 months, ensuring supply security and lot-to-lot reproducibility for long-term workflows. Every order includes a lot-specific Certificate of Analysis (CoA). Additional documentation — EDQM CEP (AUS), 9CFR CoA (US), TSE/BSE statement, Certificate of Origin (CoO) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) — is available on request. Products are handled at ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 certified partner facilities.
